Portable Storage Offers Safe Haven for Hurricane Season

/24-7PressRelease/ - KANSAS CITY, MO - June 04, 2008 - The 2008 hurricane season has officially begun. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted 12 to 16 named storms between June 1 and November 30. The Atlantic Coast can expect up to nine hurricanes in 2008.

"Living in a coastal state means having a plan for each and every hurricane season. Review or complete emergency plans now - before a storm threatens," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "Planning and preparation is the key to storm survival and recovery."

Despite strong warnings - and despite devastating hurricane seasons in 2004 and 2005 - a national survey reveals a dangerously high percentage of residents in hurricane-vulnerable states still are not adequately informed or prepared to protect their families and homes.

The Mason-Dixon poll shows some residents of hurricane-vulnerable states say they will not evacuate and prefer to weather storms at home. Many residents lack disaster plans, and many are still misinformed about how to protect themselves and their families during a storm. The poll shows even many of the residents who live within 30 miles of the coast fail to take proper precautions. Portable storage can play a key role for consumers and businesses preparing for a storm.

"Portable storage units are useful for many purposes, but come hurricane season they can preserve goods - and even lives," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Containerized storage can be used as a temporary shelter before, during or after a storm, and can also keep valuable property safe."
