Power Your Life To Tackle Tough Transgender Topic

Dr. Jo Anne White Talks Candidly with Three Transgender Individuals

"Transgender equality is truly about the civil rights of all people regardless of their gender orientation, race, ability, sexual preference, religion or class." says TV host Dr. Jo Anne White.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, April 13, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Not too long ago, the transgender lifestyle was hardly mentioned, but with Bruce Jenner's reported upcoming announcement, the topic has moved to the forefront.

As gender identity becomes a popular issue in the public eye - on TV, on the web, just about everywhere - major television networks and cable outlets are creating programs about the life of a transgender. Amazon's dramedy Transparent scored two Golden Globes, The T Word documentary debuted on MTV last fall, and ABC Family's Becoming Us is premiering this summer.

In the meantime, 2014 was a banner year for transgender legal rights. The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) worked with the Obama administration to push through the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The law makes it possible for transgender Americans to receive transition-related care for the first time. In addition, the Department of Education granted Title IX protection to transgender students.

This Tuesday, April 14th at 1:30 p.m. on the Power your Life Show on WMCN TV, Dr. Jo Anne White will tackle the transgender issue with real facts and real people. She'll feature four individuals whose lives have been completely transformed by transgender. www.drjoannewhite.com

Mama Deb Mancini, an everyday mom with real-life experience and a radio personality, shares her story as the parent of transgender child, Eve. She'll talk about her first reaction to finding out and how to overcome the hatred others may feel toward transgender people. Eve Mancini will also join the conversation to discuss her life as a transgender. She'll address what you should do if someone who is transgender comes out to you, and how you can educate yourself on the topic from reliable sources.

Kristin Beck, born Christopher Beck, is a former United States Navy SEAL who gained public attention when she came out as a transgender in 2013. Beck is currently running for Congress, and if elected, she'd be the first openly transgender in the national office.

Playwright, actor, theater critic and performance poet, Christine Howey, will also join Dr. White. Christine performed her one-person show about her transgender journey, Exact Change, which had a world premiere January 2014. She'll discuss the challenges of changing gender in mid-life, the impact on employment, and the joy of diving into your identity.

Dr. White says it's important to respect the choices transgender individuals make.

"Transgender equality is truly about the civil rights of all people regardless of their gender orientation, race, ability, sexual preference, religion or class. Equality is what this country has proudly been built upon. To deny someone their ability to work or participate in activities is to perpetuate intolerance and prejudice, which continues to create barriers to social justice and acceptance. Now is the time for change to take place and to recognize, respect and appreciate the value of all people. When that happens, our world will be a different, a better place, in which to live," she says.
