Prolific Film Music Composer Brings 'Life And Depth' To Paul D. Hannah's 'Sin Seer' BET Movie

Paul D. Hannah's "Sin Seer" will feature music from composer Mark Daniel Dunnett.

"The tone I came up with is a little dark, haunting and a little hopeful - a mix of undertones and suspense."

LOS ANGELES, CA, December 23, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Film music composer Mark Daniel Dunnett, who has scored more than 40 pictures including "My Funny Valentine" starring Tom Payne and Pippa Black and Luke Hupton's "27, Memory Lane," is composing a new original score for "The Sin Seer," a suspense thriller feature film written and directed by Paul D. Hannah ("The Marriage Chronicles").

Produced by Hannah's Overflow Entertainment, Isaiah Washington ("Grey's Anatomy") and Angela White ("Comedy Underground, Going to Cali, Vol. 1"), "The Sin Seer" will premiere in 2015 on BET.

Starring with Washington are Black Reel Award nominee Lisa Arrindell Anderson ("Disappearing Acts," "A Lesson Before Dying"), Richard Brooks ("Law & Order"), Salli Richardson-Whitfield ("I Am Legend"), Michael Ironside ("Total Recall," "Top Gun") and C. Thomas Howell ("The Outsiders," "E.T."). Washington and Anderson previously collaborated on screen in Spike Lee's critically acclaimed crime drama, "Clockers."

"The Sin Seer" follows the story of Rose Ricard (Anderson), who has the special ability to see into souls, to discern truths from lies and to perceive others' thoughts before they are formed. Using her gifts to help solve crimes, Rose's most recent case opens the doors to her own past and that of her new partner, Grant Summit (Washington).

Dunnett's organically composed orchestral score includes intricate string writing composition with select electronic synthesis that gives different characters and scenes distinct musical associations.

"The tone I came up with is a little dark, haunting and a little hopeful - a mix of undertones and suspense," he said. "I featured the clarinet with the strings and clarinet doubled with oboe. The clarinet can give that lonely feeling when played right as well as a hollow and haunting sound especially with the oboe doubled at unison can be eerie like. The score is pretty much organic in the sense that I used mostly traditional instruments but, there was also a bit electronic, synthesizers used to give it a thicker, dark feel with low undertones in parts."

"His score was amazing," Hannah said. "It brought life and depth to a film I am so passionate about."

Dunnett conceptualized musical themes that matched thematic themes portrayed in the plot.

"Paul gave me a lot of musical freedom. He gave me the reigns," Dunnett said. "I did come up with a theme that was associated with the Rose character - mostly a theme of justice. She's the better good, this light at the end of the tunnel and hope for the good of humanity. There was kind of a a gospel part to this film, as the family is very religious. I decided to use a little bit of gospel undertones for what turned out to become the 'family theme' in the film. This is were you find good use of the plagal cadence."

One of Hollywood's best burgeoning film and television composers to watch, Dunnett lead composed earlier this year for the feature horror film, "Halloween Hell," starring Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts ("Runaway Train").

Dunnett composed music for "Boardwalk Poets" starring Daniel Baldwin and "Love's Devotion Forever" starring Jay Thomas. His film music has also been heard in "The Matrix Reloaded" starring Keanu Reeves, Paramount's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" starring Angelina Jolie, MGM's "Rollerball" starring Chris Klein, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "C.S.I. Vegas" and "The Dr. Oz Show."

Showing his versatility, Dunnett composed a full live recorded orchestral piece for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Collaborating again with Hannah, Dunnett is next scoring music for Hannah's horror film, "Ulterior Motives: Reality TV Massacre." He's also working on music for the feature documentary, "Calling Spielberg."
