What makes an Espresso so great?



Espresso! The name, the size, the caffeine kick, everything about a cup of espresso makes it appear to be the perfect snappy drink.

However, even though baristas make the process look like it could be done in one's sleep, there is a lot more to this little caffeinated treasure than what you may think. Now, if you are a coffee lover then you have most likely heard the phrase "pulling a shot of espresso." But for those of you who don't know, this refers to the entire process from grinding the coffee beans to serving the customer.

The process begins with the grinding of the coffee beans into just the right consistency. Then the perfect amount of 6-8 grams of coffee grinds must be packed into the filter oh so tightly to make sure that the 190 degree - 200 degree Fahrenheit water that forces its way through comes out with the perfect espresso blend. Because espresso is another word for fast, the extraction process for a cup of 25ml should only take around 25 seconds. Remember, an espresso is not a drink of quantity but of quality.

If the barista has perfected the art of espresso making then the coffee should be a hazelnut color and carry an aroma so balanced and rich that it could be recognized anywhere. Then comes the final test. The barista hands over her masterpiece to the customer who takes that first sip and....Ah. The harmonious blend dances across the taste buds like no other.

Espresso, although strong, should not have a dominant flavor. It should have a creamy texture yet a full bodied liquid that together create a coffee paradise. With all of these high expectations, it is no wonder baristas are considered the artists of the coffee world. When they create their work they use time, temperature, and pressure to turn great coffee grinds into the perfect espresso.
