/24-7PressRelease/ - GURNEE, IL, June 02, 2008 - It is amazing the lengths a recreational golfer will go to shave a stroke or two off his game. Tennis players want that little extra edge even when they play with the same foursome every week. Gurnee dentists Dr Ira L Shapira and Dr Mark Amidei are pleased to announce that they are offering Pure Power Mouthguards to improve the performance of Athletes in Chicago and Milwaukee areas. Pure Power Mouthguards utilize jaw positions determined by Neuromuscular Dentistry to optimize physiology in athletes. Dr Shapira and Dr Amidei can be reached at 847-623-5530 or by their website www.delanydentalcare.com. Information on these appliances can be found on the companies website: http://ppmmouthguard.com/ Dr Shapira is familiar with the effect a neuromuscular orthotic can have on performance. He made an orthotic for a patient who thru the shot put and hoped to win a national championship. The orthotic worked and he thru the shot 8 inches further than his previous personal best unfortunately he had an off day at the national championship. Another patient trying to get a shot at the majors as a pitcher increased the force of his throw enough that his coach had to add pading to his glove. Dr Shapira feels that great athletes may have a naturally perfect neuromuscular position but sees nothing wrong with increasing strength with a mouthguard or an orthotic. This is not a case of dangerous steroids to increase strength but the correction of a less than perfect posture. It is not much different than having an orthotic in your shoe to prevent knee pain or back pain according to Dr Mark Amidei. He has always been into fitness and became involved with neuromuscular dentistry when he personally experienced an increase in strength with an orthotic. Dr Amidei has had a permanant correction to a neuromuscular position after realizing his chronic back and shoulder pain was gone with a neuromuscular orthotic.

Neuromuscular dentistry has been used for many years to treat chronic head and neck pain as well as TMJ/TMD or TMJ disorders. TMJ disorders can affect the TM Joint causing pain and clicking, they can also affect muscles, posture and the neuromuscular system. Neuromuscular Dentistry is also the underlying physiologic basis for cosmetic and Reconstructive dentistry taught at Las Vegas Institute that restores not only teeth but normalizes facial contours. This is often called the Dental Facelift of Virtual Facelift as it can make impressive changes that can look as good as a facelift without surgery.

Jaw position does not just effect strength, posture and pain but according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood institute Sleep apnea is a TMJ disorder. Neuromuscular dentistry is an excellent treatment for painful conition but a different type of oral appliance is used to treat snoring and sleep apnea. There are similarities in what an airway optimizing apnea appliace does and how a neuromuscular orthotic works.

Dr Barney Jankelson pioneered neuromuscular Dentistry and his son Dr Robert Jankelson carried on his work. Dr Jankelson founded Myotronics a biomedical company that specializes in instrumentation for neuromuscular dentistry. Dr Jankelson was also the man primarily responsible for the formation of ICCMO, The International College of CranioMandibular Orthopedics. ICCMO is the single most important organization dedicated to the art and science of neuromuscular dentistry. Dentists who belong to ICCMO have exhibited an intense desire to continue learning and advancing the field.

Dr Ira Shapira and Dr Mark Amidei have been practicing Neuromuscular Dentistry in their Gurnee office and see patients from Chicago, Milwaukee, Oakbrook, Barrington, Highland Park, Libertyvile, Lake Forest, Deerfield and across Chicagoland.

They are graduates of Las Vegas Institute and are known for their exquisite cosmetic, reconstructive and implant dental rehabilitations. Dr Shapira has been practicing Neuromuscular Dentistry for over 25 years and studied with Dr Barney Jankelson, Dr Jim Garry, Dr Dayton Krajiec, Dr Norman Thomas and other founders of the field. He is a Fellow and Regent of ICCMO and a representative to the TMD Alliance for ICCMO along with Dr Barry Cooper. Dr Cooper is recognized as having more documentation of neuromuscular cases than any other doctor. Dentists wishing to learn neuromuscular dentistry can spend three days with Dr Cooper in individual or small sessions and learn what could otherwise take years and tens of thousands of dollars. Dr Cooper can be contacted thru his website at: http://www.tmjtmd.com/information/

Dr Shapira is well known for his treatment of TMJ Disorders and chronic headaches but he is probably best known for his work with sleep apnea and snoring. He was a charter and credentialed member of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society, which later became The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Seventeen years ago the Sleep Disorder Dental Society started with 20 Charter members, it is now the fastest growing dental organization and over 400 people may attend the meeting in Baltimore on June6-8, 2008. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and a founding member of DOSA, the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea. He served as a visiting asst professor at Rush Medical School in the 1980's where he used neuromuscular diagnostic equipment to evaluate the jaw positions and similarities between female TMJ patients and male sleep apnea patients. He returned to Rush in the 1990's to treat sleep apnea and snoring patients utilizing concepts of Dental Sleep Medicine and Neuromuscular Dentistry.

Dr Shapira is the founder of I HATE CPAP LLC the premiere company promoting Dental Sleep Medicine and helping patients find Sleep Apnea Dentists across the United States.
