MILPITAS, CA, May 06, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ali Rashidee, MD, MS, Director for Safety and Risk Management at Quantros, Inc., will be a featured speaker this week at the Second Annual Meeting of Patient Safety Organizations (PSO). The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), which oversees PSOs, is organizing the Baltimore conference.

Dr. Rashidee's presentation is titled, "Collaboration between PSOs: System Infrastructure for Knowledge Discovery and Sharing."

The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 (Patient Safety Act) authorized the creation of PSOs to improve the quality and safety of U.S. health care delivery. The Patient Safety Act encourages clinicians and health care organizations to voluntarily report and share quality and patient safety information to PSOs without fear of legal discovery. According to AHRQ, PSOs create a secure environment where organizations can collect and analyze data, thereby improving quality by identifying and reducing risks associated with patient care.

Building a "Community of Practice" across multiple PSOs will bring added insight, collaboration and cross-initiatives for improving safety, Rashidee said, adding, "There's a wealth of knowledge and benefits to be leveraged across PSO entities."

Rashidee serves as medical director of the Quantros Patient Safety Center (QPSC), a PSO created by Quantros, a Silicon Valley-based healthcare software and services company. Prior to coming to Quantros, Rashidee held senior roles within leading academic and public healthcare organizations including Vanderbilt University, AHRQ and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Last week, Rashidee was named a principal investigator on a research project funded by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF). Rashidee and Quantros will partner with the Boston-based Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School to research errors associated with Computerized Prescriber Order Entry (CPOE).
