He is best known for derivation of precise rates of convergence in multi-dimensional central limit theorems, establishing the validity of formal Edgeworth expansions for classical statistics, obtaining useful criteria for stability and central limit theorems for diffusions and other Markov processes, applying probabilistic methods to analyze certain classes of differential equations, and for developing nonparametric methods for statistics on manifolds.

In 1959, Dr. Bhattacharya obtained an MSc in Statistics from the University of Calcutta in India. He immigrated to the United States, where he studied and graduated from the University of Chicago with a PhD in Statistics in 1967. After graduating, Dr. Bhattacharya became an assistant professor of statistics at the University of California, Berkley, from 1967 to 1972. He worked as an associate professor and then a professor of mathematics at the University of Arizona from 1972 to 1982.

Starting in 1982 and until 2002, Dr. Bhattacharya was a professor of mathematics at Indiana University, Bloomington. Since 2002, Dr. Bhattacharya has continued his career as an educator at the University of Arizona. He is currently a professor of mathematics at this university. Married to Bithika Banerjee on August 11, 1967, the couple raised two children together: Urmi and Deepta--a mathematician and a biologist, respectively.

Together with co-authors, Dr. Bhattacharya has published a number of research monographs and graduate texts: "Normal Approximation and Asymptotic Expansions" in 1976, "Stochastic Processes with Applications" and "Asymptotic Statistics" in 1990, "Random Dynamical Systems" and "A Basic Course in Probability Theory" in 2007, "Nonparametric Inference on Manifolds" in 2012 and "A Course in Mathematical Statistics and Large Sample Theory" in 2016. Throughout his career, Dr. Bhattacharya has contributed various research articles to esteemed professional journals. Dr. Bhattacharya served as an associate editor for The Annals of Probability from 1976 to 1981 and again from 2000 to 2002. He also was an associate editor for several other professional journals: The Journal of Multivariate Analysis from 1985 to 1992, The Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference from 1984 to 1988, Econometric Theory from 1985 to 1999, Statistica Sinica from 2002 to 2008, The Annals of Applied Probability from 2006 to 2009, and Sankhya from 2008 to 2011.

Dr. Bhattacharya is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, as well as a member of the American Mathematical Society. In 2000, he was a Guggenheim fellow. His achievements have been awarded with the Alexander von Humboldt Forschungs prize from 1993 to 1994. Dr. Bhattacharya has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest and the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America. He also has been featured in the first, ninth, and 10th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
