Rare Canadian Banknotes Offered at U.S. Auction House

Many Rare & High Grade Notes To Be Sold

GREENVILLE, SC, June 25, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A small but prestigious group of rare Canadian banknotes will be a central attraction for the July 11th banknote auction held by Manifest Auctions in Greenville, South Carolina. "While nothing has a presale estimate higher than $10,000," says Manning Garrett, director of banknote auctions, "we expect that the combination of rarity and condition could very well drive the final prices well above that $10,000 mark." The rarest piece of Canadian currency in the auction is a 1917 $5 note from the Home Bank of Canada. It is the finest of just ten pieces known to exist. The highest grade note in the sale is a PMG 64 1920 $1 Newfoundland note. A note from that series in a choice uncirculated grade or better has never been auctioned.

Collectors specializing in Dominion of Canada notes will likely be interested in the 1897 red-brown back $2 note. It has been awarded the PPQ designation by PCGS and it is one of only about 20 notes known of that variety number. The $50 and $100 notes from the series of 1935 should be very attractive to Bank of Canada collectors.

Garrett states that, "American collectors who traditionally focused on just U.S. currency are starting to spend more on Canadian banknotes because they seem like relative bargains." The strong U.S. dollar is helping collectors and consignors in Canada chose American auction firms in this market because of the extra purchasing power.
