Assurance Wireless' statistics report that Massachusetts is home to over 210,000 unemployed people who would be eligible for the Assurance Wireless program. Boston is the most populous city in the state with a population of 618,147 in 2011, of which 21% live below the poverty line. The US telecommunications industry is huge business, accounting for $1.1 trillion spending in 2012 according to the Telecoms Industry Association. Assurance Wireless estimates that if the 28.5 million adults eligible for Lifeline Assistance received the service, an additional $3.7 billion would be available to economically disadvantaged people.
