Born in Norway, Dr. Bjorhovde spent an extensive time learning the many complexities of engineering in his university studies. He earned a Master of Science degree (Diploma Engineer) in Civil Engineering and a Doctorate in Civil Engineering (Dr. Ing.) at the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim in 1964 and 1968, respectively. He completed his second doctoral degree, the PhD in Civil Engineering, at Lehigh University in 1972. Today, as a registered professional engineer in Montana, Canada, and Norway, he is the owner of the Bjorhovde Group, an international consortium in Tucson, AZ, nearly 20 years since it was founded in 1998.

Entering the workforce in 1964 as assistant professor of steel structures and Government Scholar at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, he worked there for eight years. Following his work at Lehigh University for the PhD, he left academia to work in practice. Spending several years as a regional and research engineer with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) in Boston and New York, he returned to the classroom in 1976, first as professor of civil engineering at the University of Alberta in Canada. Later working in the same capacity at the University of Arizona in Tucson, he proceeded to the University of Pittsburgh as Professor and Department Chair from 1987 to 1998.

Dr. Bjorhovde has conducted extensive research and design code development, including landmark work on the stability and reliability of steel columns, structural steel connections, steel materials and composite structures.

The author of more than 350 archival publications, he has received many awards, including the T. R. Higgins Award of AISC, the Research Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the NATO Senior Scientist Award, the Croes Medal, the Hardesty Award and the George Winter Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Duggan Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the IMCA Award of the Mexican Institute of Steel Construction, the Lynn S. Beedle Award of the Structural Stability Research Council, the AISC Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Charles Massonnet Award of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). The Singapore Structural Steel Society has named him an Honorary Fellow. Tsinghua University in Beijing, China appointed him to a rare Tsinghua Chair Professorship in 2012. The ASCE Board of Direction in 2014 elected him to the prestigious Distinguished Membership of the society (Dist.M.ASCE).

Dr. Bjorhovde is a member of the AISC Committee on Specifications and the Canadian steel design code (CSA S16) committee. He served on the American Iron and Steel Institute's committee for the Specification for Cold-Formed Steel Structures for many years, and was a member of the committee that developed the 2005 and 2011 Hong Kong steel design codes. He is currently an advisor to ECCS, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, and a member of ECCS and its Editorial Board, as well as TC10, the committee on Connections. He is also an advisor to the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore. He founded the AISC-ECCS International Connections Workshops in 1987; the 8th was held in Boston, Massachusetts in 2016. He is a past chairman of the Structural Stability Research Council and of the Executive Committee of the Technical Activities Division of the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute.
