Renowned Mathematician Gerald Lee Alexanderson Recognized for a Distinguished Career

Mr. Alexanderson received the Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics

He is currently the Michael & Elizabeth Valeriote Professor of Science at Santa Clara University, where he previously served as chair of the mathematics department for more than three decades.

A noted mathematician and educator, Gerald Lee Alexanderson is also an extremely prolific author, having produced more than 130 scholarly articles and reviews. Mr. Alexanderson is currently the Michael & Elizabeth Valeriote Professor of Science at Santa Clara University, where he previously served as chair of the mathematics department for more than three decades. He is also the former vice dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and former director of the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Mr. Alexanderson received a B.A. from the University of Oregon in 1955, followed by a master's degree from Stanford University in 1958. That same year, he joined the Santa Clara University faculty and proceeded to cultivate a legacy of excellence in research, teaching and the advancement of mathematics as a discipline. In addition to his academic role with the university, he was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1979 to 1986 and served as vice chair for the final two years of that period.

As is the case for anyone who is passionate about his line of work, Mr. Alexanderson has consistently committed to professional advancement in his own career and taken that pledge a step further by mentoring countless educators and students over the years. He has been involved in no less than 15 summer institutes of the National Science Foundation and cooperative programs that use students' love for science as a gateway to college. As president of the Mathematical Association of America, a post he held from 1997 to 1998, he endeavored to increase the organization's exposure to emerging professionals and fully support its membership base in maintaining standards of excellence.

In recognition of Mr. Alexanderson's myriad contributions to the mathematical profession, he has received several notable honors, including the Santa Clara University President's Special Recognition Award in 1978 and an Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Oregon granted in 1989. He has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
