CHICAGO, IL, July 06, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Recent reports show that, in the face of a harsh economy, more and more drivers are dropping their car insurance policies. Incidentally, drivers without car insurance are 10 times more likely to get into a car accident and actually be in need of coverage, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

However, it is illegal in most states to drive without car insurance. And even if you live in one of the few states where it's not illegal, it still is very irresponsible. Affordable car insurance can be found easily, so there is no need to drop the coverage, according to the Insuranceagents.com article, which recommends drivers to search online for car insurance quotes to find an affordable policy.

In the event of a car accident, responsible and insured drivers need to know what steps to take. In the Insuranceagents.com article "You've had a Car Accident: Now What Do You Do?" it details what drivers should do in the hectic and distressing situation of a car accident.

First, a driver should remain calm so as to better make important decisions and act appropriately.

"You will need to exchange valid insurance information with all parties involved in the accident," suggests the Insuranceagents.com article. "Make sure to record as many important details about the drivers and vehicles as possible, including make and model of vehicles, license plate numbers, their insurance company, policy holder name, and names and phone numbers of the drivers of the vehicles--note the relationship between the driver and the policy holder if they are not the same."

The article warns drivers not to leave the scene of an accident (which is illegal in most areas), safely maneuver their car to a safe position away from traffic, turn their car off, and evaluate any injuries.

"Health and safety are the primary concerns after an accident. Drivers involved in an accident should immediately assess whether or not anyone has been injured in the accident," and, if so, call 911, encourages the article, which also warns about the paperwork involved in injuries: exchanging important insurance information.

Liability and bodily harm are the areas where insurance companies spend the most money; medical costs can costs up to hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more, if injuries are very severe). Having proper liability coverage is essential.

"Make sure to communicate with your agent and other insurance personnel regularly. Ask questions if you are uncertain about how to proceed. Your car insurance agent is there to help you through this stressful and frustrating time--take advantage of their knowledge and experience in these matters."
