Richard Hsiao, PhD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

For almost 15 years, Dr. Hsiao served as the director of engineering and senior engineering manager at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies before retiring in 2015. Previously, he served as developmental engineer in the field of electronic packaging and semiconductor technology at IBM Tech Lab from 1986 to 1990, as well as developmental engineer at IBM Microelectronics from 1990 to 1994, research scientist on magnetic recording at the IBM Almaden Research Center from 1994 to 1999, and as engineering manager for IBM from 1999 to 2002. He began his career as a resident scientist at AT&T Bell Labs in 1985.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, U.S.A. and raised in Beijing, China, Dr. Hsiao was inspired to pursue his interests in research by his father, Xiao Jimei (also known as Jimmy Hsiao), a renowned scientist and professor recognized for his contributions by the China's president in 2014. Dr. Hsiao graduated in 1986 from the University of Pennsylvania with a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from Beijing University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Hsiao is currently an officer for a non-profit foundation where he serves to promote awareness and understanding over various aspects of Chinese culture and literature. He is particularly focused in promoting the appreciation of Chinese classical poetry. Through his own personal experience, he has found that studying classical Chinese poetry and the practice of writing poems about daily life can have a significant impact on mental health and quality of life. As a credit to his influence, hundreds of poems have been published on the foundation's website. He also helps Chinese students explore their paths to higher education in the U.S.A.; he flies back to China often for promoting poetry activities and meeting with the prospective students. Dr. Hsiao served as a key contributor to IBM's world record for magnetic recording data density, proving that this data storage technology has the potential to provide innovative improvements and increased capacity for years to come. The impact of the new technology was described in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Business Weekend and numerous other publications. The rapid advancement of this storage technology provided the foundation for today's cloud computing infrastructure. As a director of engineering at Hitachi, he led a large research and discovery team that developed the tunneling magnetic resistive technology which increased hard disk drive storage capacity significantly. Over his career, he has made substantial contributions and innovations to electronic packaging, semiconductor fabrication, and magnetic recording. These accomplishments have been recognized through numerous outstanding innovation awards.
