Prior to joining Sheppard Mullin, he was partner at Duane Morris, LLP, for four years, Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, LLP, for nine years, and Gray, Cary, Ware & Freidenrich, where he spent the bulk of his career, for 29 years.
Mr. Copeland earned his undergraduate degree at Occidental College in 1963, followed by a JD from the University of Southern California in 1966. He was then admitted to the California Bar Association and the Southern District of the U.S. District Court of California. He also holds a certificate in advanced mediation through the National Conflict Resolution Center, which enables him to mediate very complex pre-litigation and litigated matters.
Serving as an expert witness in several litigations involving intricate business, partnership and tax disputes, Mr. Copeland is also a longtime member of the American Bar Association and the California Bar Association. Locally, he has served as co-chair of the advisory board Scripps Clinic/Green Hospital and has been serving as founder and president of the Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation since 1995, a charitable trust that was established to help youths achieve success in education and has contributed over $7 million to more than 650 organizations in the San Diego region.
