Longtime professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Queens College, City University of New York, Dr. Engel's field of expertise lies mainly in chemistry. Teaching at the school at what will be his 50th year in 2018, he has also been serving as the Dean of Mathematics and Natural Science for three years since 2009. His research interests, which include years and years of study, has included a laboratory that has focused on the design and syntheses of polycationic organic salts of several topological types, including dendrimers, strings, combs, and rings. His research group, which has a continuing interest in organophosphorus chemistry (syntheses and mechanisms), has been concerned most recently with the conversion of such salts into ionic liquids and their attachment to surfaces to generate antimicrobial surfaces, where several general topological categories of polycations have been under investigation.
Dr. Engel holds 15 patents in his field and is the author of 13 books. He has also contributed more than 140 articles to professional journals throughout his career, including in the Journal of Organic Chemistry and various others. He is active as a member of the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the International Council of Chemical Association, where he has been serving as secretary and treasurer since 1997.
A former research fellow of Rohm & Hass Company and NATO, Dr. Engel served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, completing his term in the rank of Captain. Listed in Who's Who in America five times since 2005, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Carnegie Institute of Technology since 1963 and a PhD in Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University since 1966. Married to Jeanne Fabian since 2008, Dr. Engel has two children from his first wife, who sadly passed away in 2002.
