Earlier, he held the positions of associate general counsel with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1974 to 1985, supervising attorney at the Office of the General Counsel with the National Labor Relations Board from 1972 to 1974, counsel for civil rights at the Office of Solicitor, U.S. Department of Labor from 1970 to 1971, and assistant counsel for civil rights at the Office of Solicitor, U.S. Department of Labor from 1969 to 1970. Previously, Mr. Wilder served as an attorney at the Office of Solicitor for the U.S. Department of Labor from 1967 to 1969.
Mr. Wilder's experience includes acting as the spokesperson for coalitions of rail organizations in national and regional negotiations resulting in nationwide and regional freight and passenger rail contracts, as well as for airline unions engaged in negotiating company-wide agreements covering various employee crafts on many of the nation's major and regional air carriers. His background includes trial and appellate litigation in numerous important cases arising under federal laws regulating labor law, employment and employee benefits. He has also served as lead counsel in representing labor clients before Presidential Emergency Boards created by Presidents Reagan, Bush and Obama to investigate disputes that threatened to deprive the country of essential transportation service.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Wilder pursued an education at Washington & Jefferson College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He continued his studies at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1966 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Mr. Wilder was later admitted to practice by The District of Columbia Bar and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in 1967, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1967, and the Supreme Court of the United States in 1972.
Additionally, Mr. Wilder has been admitted to practice by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Circuits in 1976, the Eighth and Ninth Circuits in 1977, the Second Circuit in 1978, and the Eleventh Circuit in 1981. He has also been admitted to practice by the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1997 and the Seventh Circuit in 2002. Mr. Wilder has further been admitted to practice by the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in 1994, the District of Colorado in 1997, and the Eastern District in Michigan in 1999.
Mr. Wilder has contributed to numerous endeavors both outside and within his professional circles. From 1975 to 1981, he served as vice president of the Arlington Cubs Youth Club, Inc. He was a coach for the Fairfax Hockey Club from 1979 to 1983, and the managing editor for the Vanderbilt University Law Review from 1965 to 1966. He has served as a faculty member of the Airline and Railroad Labor and Employment Law Seminar Series with ALI-CLE since 1981. Mr. Wilder has found success with his written works as well, having contributed articles to various professional journals.
In addition to his primary trade, Mr. Wilder was affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of interest. Over many years, he has maintained membership with the American Bar Association, the International Legal Society of Phi Delta Phi, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and The Roosevelt Society. He was also recognized as an honorary flight attendant by the Joint Council of Flight Attendant Unions in 1985. Furthermore, Mr. Wilder was a guest speaker at various conferences with the National Association of Railroad Referees, the National Mediation Board and the American Bar Association, including the Passenger Rail Conference and the Labor and Employment Section at the Rail Labor Committee meetings. He was appointed as an advisor to the Dunlop Reports Review Committee (Dunlop II), created in 2009 to review the internal operations of the National Mediation Board and its implementation of recommendations made by the original John T. Dunlop Commission on the Future of Worker-Management Relations.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Wilder has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. He was previously recognized as a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Mr. Wilder has also been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
