Ronald James Chandler develops health care leadership for sustainability for hospitals, clinics and private practices. He has helped reduce overall costs and increased performance and processes for key institutional leaders in the health care field. His substantial health care background as Director of Surgical Services in many hospitals throughout the United States and British Columbia, Canada, has enabled him to amass a great amount of knowledge in the industry and provide customized solutions to improve the matrix of the surgical services department therefore increasing profitability to the institution and sustainability. He assists them in creating a strategic plan leading to patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction and profitability. He develops leadership within the ranks to empower the leaders and their staff and increase Satisfaction Scores.

Mr. Chandler has 33 years of professional experience, with 13 years as the director of surgical services and leadership development for The Chandler Group, WRC LLC. Over the years, he has established himself as an expert in leadership development, surgical services, and all areas of health care. On a daily basis, he is responsible for working with the board of directors, as well as the CEO, and other key leadership staff. He also works with physicians, nurses, administrative staff, and allied professionals in developing higher personal and professional performance plans. Mr. Chandler oversees all daily functions of the business, including marketing, finance and administration. He provides his leadership across the organization, and regularly conducts needs analyses.

Mr. Chandler summarizes his career as follows: "We have all had highs and lows in our lives, nothing new. This one time I was very down and out and I was taken as far away from what I thought I was supposed to be doing professionally and I was dealing with a great deal of stress. On the scale of one to 10 I was a 100, but who hasn't been there. In an attempt to lift my spirits, a friend invited me to a social gathering. When I arrived I realized I did not know one person outside of my host. In an attempt to be social, I mingled about feeling quite sorry for myself and I was being very successful at it, I must say. At one point a guy struck up a conversation and asked the questioned as to what I did for a living. I stood there with a blank look on my face. At this point in my life I was doing whatever I could to feed my kids and put a roof over our heads. I started to explain to him that I was educated in a number of things but I was doing whatever necessary at the time. He made a comment that I must have been frustrated and unfulfilled."

"Without even thinking I said 'What I do is not who I am, but who I am, is in everything I do,' and this I feel proud about. I realized at that moment that we take on many challenges in our lives, some planned and others by chase. It really didn't matter what I did as long as I did it with honor, integrity and with the intent on serving others. Later when I reflected back on those words, it was the self-leadership that I had learned in the Army and through sports, and the belief in a power greater than myself that helped me get through those tough times."

"Though many years have passed, as measured by some, for me it only seems like yesterday, that without a vision, leadership/followership, supported by emotional intelligence, we just move through time and space. Over the next 20 years I studied leadership, followership, learned and developed my emotional intelligence and I have had the opportunity to share this knowledge and experience in the health care field."

"I believe that understanding emotional intelligence, leadership and servitude with a clear vision supported by all concerned parties at all levels of an organization, we can accomplish any vision or goal to the best possible outcome with sustainability." The ability to develop a skill set for sustainable leadership results is what separates Mr. Chandler from others in the field. His greatest achievement has been helping people turn their businesses around, and watching them grow to a leadership role.

Looking back, Mr. Chandler attributes his success to his honesty, integrity and hard work. He became involved in his profession because of his interest in anatomy and physiology, and pursued a career in nursing. He decided to establish his own consulting company after working 30 years in health care and seeing a need for leadership development from a sustainable perspective. The most gratifying aspect of his career continues to be the success of others from mentor leadership.

"I have worked in various areas of leadership and servitude to others," says Mr. Chandler. "I have been a director of outdoor education for a centre for emotionally disturbed children in Ontario, to a school nurse, nurse consultant to children's air societies, to medical surgical and as a director of surgical services throughout North America and in the Canadian Armed Forces. I continue on with leadership development as a consultant as well as continued education in leadership at the graduate level."

Mr. Chandler is pursuing a master's degree in leadership from the City University of Seattle, Washington. In addition, he became a registered nurse through Sir Sandford Fleming College, and he is certified in operating room nursing and management through George Brown College. He is a member of the Shenandoah Arts Council, the American Association for OR Nurses, and Rotary International. In years to come, Mr. Chandler would like to continue developing leadership in health care and to improve patient care.
