CHICAGO, IL, February 14, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Roy A.E. Bakay, MD, Physician and Professor at Rush University Medical Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in medical education and research. He has been distinguished as an Elite American Physician and was previously featured in Cambridge Publishing's "Top 101 Industry Experts" book.

Dr. Bakay joined the department of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center Chicago in 2000, and currently serves in several leadership roles. He is the A. Watson Armour III and Sara Armour Presidential Professor, vice chairman, and residency research director of the departments of neurosurgery and pharmacology. He has expertise in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and also directs neuroanatomical research. Dr. Bakay has chosen to focus his current studies on neural tissue transplantation and gene therapy techniques. . Throughout his distinguished career, his research interests have included movement disorders (known medically as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, ect), Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and stem cell transplantation.

A leading authority on surgery for movement disorders, Dr. Bakay received funding from the National Institutes of Health to study deep brain stimulation and pallidotomy, which are techniques used to treat patients with Parkinson's disease. He has also received several clinical grants from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc., Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Bayer AG and Medtronic, Inc. In addition, Dr. Bakay serves as a topic editor for the Journal of Neurosurgery and has worked on the editorial board of several medical journals. He has authored four books, 60chapters, 169 journal articles and 325 other publications.

Dr. Bakay has been fascinated by the biology of the human brain since his undergraduate days at Beloit College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1971, and was also the captain of the football team. After earning an MD from the Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1975, he completed a residency in neurological surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center. Dr. Bakay then continued his education with a fellowship in neuronal plasticity with the National Institutes of Health and joined the faculty at Emory University. He attributes his success throughout his career to hard work, dedication and a fortuitous sequence of events.

He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Joint Washington Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. He is also affiliated with the Epilepsy Foundation of America, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the International Essential Tremor Foundation, the American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair, the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Surgery, the International Symposium on Neural Transplantation, the Southern Neurosurgical Society and the United Network for Organ Sharing. He has received numerous awards, including America's Top Doctor since 1994 and Chicago Super Doctor in 2012.
