Previously spending the first 20 years of his teaching career in his home country, he taught at the University of the Witwatersrand's Graduate School of Business Administration in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he also served as the head of marketing and director of academic programs. Prior to his years at the University of the Witwatersrand, he taught and served as head of management at Wits Business School, also in South Africa.
A fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science and the American Marketing Association, Dr. Abratt continues to serve as a visiting professor of marketing at Wits Business School. He formerly served as a visiting professor at the University of Florida, Warwick Business School in the UK, and The Ohio State University. He has also contributed more than 100 articles to professional journals, and has authored several chapters to books during his 40-plus years in education.
Dr. Abratt holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of the Witwatersrand and a Master of Business Administration and PhD from the University of Pretoria. Born in Pretoria, South Africa, he has been married for 40 years to Phyllis Esther Kramer.
Named Teacher of the Year in 2006 and Faculty of the Year in 2010 at the Huizenga School of Business, he also recognized as a H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship Professor of the Year in 2014, which is presented annually to a full-time faculty member who has served at the university for at least 10 years, has achieved national and/or international prominence, and has earned a distinguished reputation through significant contributions to research and scholarship and exceptional instruction. He has also been included in the 68th edition of Who's Who in America and the 30th and 31st editions of Who's Who in the World.
