BROOKLYN, NY, December 27, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Red Rover has been named the January 2012 beneficiary for Rescue Chocolate, the vegan chocolate company which donates 100% of its profits to various animal rescue organizations.

Founded in 1987, Red Rover focuses on bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through a variety of programs, including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education. The organization is based in Sacramento, California.

In addition to helping animals in need, Red Rover piloted a unique program that aids children as well. Called Red Rover Readers, it is a community-based literacy initiative that helps children develop empathy and critical thinking skills through stories and discussion about animals.

On the other coast, Rescue Chocolate operates out of Brooklyn, New York. The chocolate company was founded in January 2010 by chocolate aficionado and animal-lover Sarah Gross.

"I can't volunteer in person at Red Rover, because the commute is a bit too far," Gross said. "But I love what they're doing and I'm honored to be able to contribute in my small way to their enormous good works."

Her company offers a product line of kosher and vegan chocolate bars and truffles. Each flavor is named after an issue important in the animal rescue world. For example, there are bars called Peanut Butter Pit Bull (which aims to rehabilitate the image of this misunderstood breed), Pick Me! Pepper (urging people to pick out their next four-legged companion at a shelter rather than a pet store), Foster-iffic Peppermint (pointing out the benefits of fostering a homeless animal even if one can't ultimately adopt), The Fix (emphasizing the importance of spaying and neutering), and Mission Feral Fig (highlighting the humane management of feral cat colonies).

Gross cautions that while sales ultimately benefit the animals, her chocolate products are only for human consumption.
Rescue Chocolate products are sold in retail outlets around the country as well as online. To learn more about Rescue Chocolate or to order products benefiting Red Rover, visit http://www.RescueChocolate.com. For more information on Red Rover, visit http://www.RedRover.org.
