As vacationers hit the roads and waves this summer, there are a few important safety tips every driver and boater should know and follow.
No matter what kind of vehicle you're using for summer fun, whether it's a car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, ATV or boat, it's crucial that you never drink and drive. Impaired drivers are one of the leading causes of highway and boating fatalities.
Smart Driving
In cities and on the highways, it's crucial that drivers take precautions to ensure that they and their families arrive at their destinations safely.
-Always make sure everyone buckles their seatbelts. More than half of driving fatalities involve people who fail to wear a seatbelt.
-Don't speed: The faster you go, the more difficult it is to slow and stop safely.
-Don't tailgate or allow tailgating of your vehicle. Maintain a two-second distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you. If someone is tailgating behind your vehicle, change lanes or gradually slow down to encourage them to pass you.
-Be aware: Slow down going through intersections, even if you have a green light or right of way. Accidents frequently occur in intersections because of drivers who run red lights or try to time their passage through an intersection with the changing of lights from red to green.
-Don't use a cell phone while driving. Research indicates that talking on the phone while driving can be as unsafe as drinking and driving.
Motorcycle Safety
Because they are the most vulnerable drivers, motorcyclists should always be the most defensive drivers on the road.
-Always wear a helmet.
-Stay out of other drivers' blind spots.
-Wear protective, reflective clothing.
-Go slow and always be aware of the distance between you and other vehicles.
Safe Boating
Just as on the highways, it's crucial that you never get behind the wheel after drinking on the waterways. It's also important to make sure everyone in your craft is wearing lifejackets. Also, experts urge recreational boaters to know how to swim and to take a boating safety course about navigational rules, emergency procedures and the effects of wind, weather and water conditions.
Stay Safe
By following the above safety tips, you have a better chance of avoiding motor vehicle accidents this summer. Even with these precautions however, accidents still happen.
