/24-7PressRelease/ - SAN DIEGO, CA - July 28, 2008 - Salugen (www.salugen.com), a life sciences company, announces today a published study linking a gene with percent body fat. In an analysis of 257 subjects, Salugen researchers clearly show that obese people are more likely to have a variation in a gene associated with excess sugar cravings and carbohydrates. This study clearly supports the relevance of Salugen's proprietary anti-craving technology that utilizes genetic testing to identify predispositions to the Top 3 Leading Causes of Preventable Death in the United States and then delivers medical foods and nutritional solutions to reduce those cravings and promote wellbeing. Through the Salugen System, clinicians can test patients for a genetic predisposition to their percent body fat and address their weight loss goals with a nutritional intervention proven in clinical studies to reduce cravings and weight.
In the peer reviewed scientific journal, Gene Therapy and Molecular Biology, Salugen researchers and scientists at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, City of Hope National Medical Center, Baylor College of Medicine, and other leading institutions studied 257 subjects in a genetic association study. In this study, there were 122 obese test subjects and 135 non-obese controls. Each subject was genotyped for the dopamine D2 receptor Taq 1 allele. Among controls, 30 subjects were well-screened controls excluding a wide range of addictive behaviors and 105 subjects were moderately-screened controls to exclude for substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. Compared to the well-screened controls, this Sweet Tooth Gene or Craving Gene variation was found in 67% of the obese subjects versus only 3.3% of controls (p_0.0001). And in comparison to the moderately-screen controls, this gene variation was found in 67% of obese subjects versus only 33.3% of controls (p_0.001).
This research published by Salugen supports the findings from earlier publications suggesting that this genetic analysis is associated with body mass index, obesity, and many other weight measures.
"Obesity is the 2nd largest cause of preventable death in the United States. If we can help in some small way to prevent the illnesses, costs, and deaths from this frustrating epidemic, we will have done something special," states CEO Brian Meshkin.
