/24-7PressRelease/ - SAN DIEGO, CA, July 16, 2008 - Salugen, Inc. (www.salugen.com), a life sciences company, announces today a scientific publication to supports its core anti-craving nutrigenomic technology. In a peer reviewed medical journal, the study authors suggest how genetic analysis and manipulation of a brain enzyme through nutritional ingredients can reduce excess craving behavior and prevent relapse in the Top 3 Leading Causes of Preventable Death in the United States. In the peer-reviewed medical journal, Medical Hypotheses, the article is entitled "Manipulation of catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT) activity to influence the attenuation of substance seeking behavior, a subtype of Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS), is dependent upon gene polymorphisms: A hypothesis." In this publication, Salugen researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and universities in Taiwan and Spain suggest that Salugen's core technology involving a proprietary nutrient formulation, combined with its patent-protected DNA analysis may be a useful adjunct to therapy when used in outpatient recovery.
Study authors state that an important enzyme, catechol-o-methyl transferase (COMT) activity, relies on gene polymorphisms. Study authors explain that earlier studies from Salugen's researchers showed a significant reduction in relapse rates when using an earlier version of its nutritional formulation in outpatient DUI offenders with either alcohol or cocaine-related problems. They went on to explain that in a more recent study with some additional ingredients, the recovery rate was 79.1%, out of 76 patients (alcohol and methamphetamine related) attending a 12 month program.
While further studies are warranted, Salugen researchers suggest that these data coupled together, along with additional studies completed and ongoing, continue to support the value of Salugen's core technology to identify the underlying genetic factors of excess cravings and then provide an adjunct treatment for associated conditions.
