/24-7PressRelease/ - SAN DIEGO, CA, May 29, 2008 - Salugen, Inc. (www.salugen.com), a life sciences company, announces today that it is focusing its business plan after spending the past three years exploring the potential of nutrigenetics and personalized nutrition. Senior management has decided to focus on gene testing, medical foods, and nutritional ingredients to help reduce excessive cravings involved in the Top 3 Leading Causes of Preventable Death - alcohol and drug abuse, weight problems and smoking. Salugen has patent-protected, clinically proven medical foods and nutritional formulations to reduce stress and cravings, as well as patent-protected gene tests to help identify these persons and customize their treatment.
Over 20% of the world's population has a chemical imbalance which limits their natural ability to feel reward and pleasure due to their genes. These gene variations cause unnatural stress resulting in excess cravings and addictive behaviors. Gene-guided cravings are involved in the Top 3 Leading Causes of Preventable Death in the United States which account for over 33% of all preventable deaths. These Top 3 Leading Causes of Preventable Death are smoking, obesity, and alcohol and drug addiction.
"Simply, Salugen's goal is to reduce or eliminate the illness, costs, and deaths associated with these preventable disorders," states CEO Brian Meshkin. "We have been blessed to be a pioneer in the field of nutritional genetics and learning exactly how to implement such technology with consumers and in clinics. By testing many applications, we have been blessed with more effective products than we have resources to commercialize. Due to limited resources, we need to focus our efforts and partner in other areas."
Salugen, Inc. was incorporated in April 2005 and began two years of pilots. Salugen focused on pilots (over 12), patents (in-licensed and submitting its own), and publications - conducting studies and publishing them (over 15). To fund this stage, Salugen raised approximately $700,000 in seed capital. Some of these pilots included DNA-customized weight loss through GenoTrim sold directly to consumers (www.genotrim.com), all-natural addiction treatment as an alternative sentence to incarceration in Las Vegas-Clark County courts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbDOvRcQC-8), and personalized vitamins to spa guests through SpaGen sold at marquee spas such as Spa Bellagio and MGM-Grand Spa (www.SpaGen.com). After two years, management evaluated the pilot lessons and concluded that the Company will focus on its proprietary line of medical foods and nutrient formulations in addictive wellness and excess cravings, and then establish strategic partners to bring certain brands to market in other related areas.
In related matters, the Company also announces that it has terminated its contract with DNA Services of America for the marketing and distribution of GenoTrim and is exploring other distribution partners. The Company also announces that it has accepted the resignation of Ms. Lonna Williams as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
