ATLANTA, GA, March 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Samantha Schwindel, 20, of Spencer County, IN, was awarded the 2017 John Foy & Associates "Strong Arm" Leukemia Scholarship awarded annually by one of Atlanta's most established personal injury law firms, John Foy & Associates..

The scholarship is awarded to anyone who has had leukemia or whose life has been affected by leukemia. Schwindel, in her award-winning essay, wrote about her brother, Chris, who was diagnosed at 15 in 1998 and subsequently passed away from Acute Lymphatic Leukemia.

Schwindel, 20, is a senior at Indiana University, Bloomington, with a 3.843 GPA, majoring in psychology with minors in Spanish and social welfare advocacy. She has been accepted into University of Louisville 's School of Social Work where she will specialize in Psychosocial Oncology so that she can help patients with cancer and their families.

Applicants for this scholarship must write a 500- to 1,000-word essay on one of three topics. Schwindel answered the question: "How has living with your or your loved one's leukemia affected your education?"

In her essay, Samantha wrote about how, as the youngest of seven children, she would accompany her mother and brother on a weekly trip to Riley's Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The car ride was three hours one way from their home in rural southern Indiana to the state capital. She was too little to leave for these long days, and that turned out to be a blessing because baby Samantha offered Chris comfort, relief and normalcy during his eight-hour treatments.

Schwindler has learned a lot about what she calls "life after loss."

"Even though that person is no longer with you, you can still carry them with you, and it's really just a beautiful process."

In addition to Samantha and Chris, parents Sharon Schwindel and Mike Schwindel, who both live in rural Spencer County, have another son (who was Chris' twin) and four more daughters.

Our firm founder, John Foy, funded this scholarship in 2015 to raise awareness for this often-deadly disease. John Foy & Associates was founded in 1999 to provide protection and compensation for victims of another's negligence.
