NASSAU, BAHAMAS, March 12, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A new harbor front residential community known as Schooner Bay opened in January in Abaco, Bahamas, bringing a new look to Bahamas real estate.

The community is designed for sustainable living and includes its own farm and farmers market as well as a mixture of shops, restaurants, offices and boutique inns, said Rachel Pinder, principal broker of Island Living Real Estate in Nassau.

"This community promises to provide residents with all of the things that make for enjoyable Bahamian living, all the while being sustainable and making it a more pedestrian-friendly community in which to live," the Bahamas Realtor, Rachel Pinder said.

Clint Kemp, a spokesman for Schooner Bay, said "sustainability" is more than just a popular buzzword for the newly-developed community.

"It has become the framing dynamic of our lives going forward," Kemp said. "The caretakers of the Schooner Bay vision have gone to unprecedented lengths to create a place that is authentic to its reality, modeling a true expression of sustainable development and consideration of future generations."

Upon completion of all building phases, Schooner Bay will house a beach club, fishing lodge, equestrian center, hotels, a community center and a school, among many other amenities. Long-term goals include adding a medical facility and ambulance station.

Homes built on the 600 home sites will be constructed in the quaint, historical Bahamian fashion, Pinder said. One side of Schooner Bay offers deep sea for fishing and snorkeling, while the shallow waters on the other side are ideal for bonefishing.

The Black Fly Lodge at Schooner Bay will be a semi-private club with a limited number of memberships. Designed in the style of the traditional Bahamian great house, it will feature 10 rooms, a restaurant and an outfitter store.

The community also will have The School at Schooner Bay, which will begin as a Pre-K through third grade educational facility.

But with all these amenities, the element that sets the community apart from almost every other Bahamian community is its dedication to environmental care, Kemp said. Every home will include the most efficient energy systems and recycling will be built into the garbage collection systems of every kitchen. All waste will be recycled, composted or incinerated using the latest green technology.

"Every effort will be made to reduce the carbon footprint of the community and protect the natural environment of Schooner Bay," he said.
