Mr. Burns' extended financial and military experience has made him wary of advising clients to deploy all of their assets to achieve an objective in one direction. Instead, he suggests a three-pronged approach to help assure a profitable and secure retirement.

• Arbitrage, the second pillar, refers to finding investments, such as real estate or stock, that will offer greater returns along with the money you borrowed through leveraging. The classic example is when the bank takes your money and lends it for eighteen percent and gives you five percent for its use.
• Cash flow, the third pillar, is the steady income generated from the investment that you secured through the leverage and arbitrage pillars—such as rent from tenants in an apartment complex that you bought.
"My tactic is certainly timely as we are heading into the biggest reduction of pension plans and the highest costs for Medicaid and Medicare over the last decade," says Mr. Burns. "People need to understand unconventional wealth strategies and why the old ideas don't work any longer."
