Se-Eun Jhang, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

One of the highlights of Dr. Jhang's career has been serving as the president for the Korean Association for Corpus Linguistics and the Korean Association of Language Sciences.

Dr. Jhang is a professor in the department of English language and literature at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University, South Korea's most prestigious national university for maritime study, transportation science and engineering. Becoming involved in his profession due to his interest in maritime English and culture, he has since been interested in Maritime English for specific purposes and maritime culture growing out of a broader understanding of not only the use of the sea by humans, but cultural identifiers and associations made between people and seafaring. Dr. Jhang's research is based on corpus linguistics merging with network analysis, especially keyword network analysis and collocation network analysis, which provide a better explanation for linguistic and culture considerations. He believes that understanding Maritime English, as well as maritime culture and research on the related subjects, are very important for maritime industry.

The director of the World Ocean Development Institute since 2016 and director of the Maritime Business Communication Center since 2010, both located at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University, Dr. Jhang was first hired at the university in 1996 as an assistant professor and later associate professor, and he spent two years as vice dean of the College of International Studies beginning in 2004. He previously spent two years as a lecturer at Pusan National University, Dongseo University and at his current university, was a research assistant at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, and spent a year as a visiting scholar in the linguistics department at the University of California, San Diego, and at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States.

One of the highlights of Dr. Jhang's career has been serving as the president for the Korean Association for Corpus Linguistics and the Korean Association of Language Sciences. He has been the vice president of the Linguistic Society of Korea since 2017 and president of the Busan Corpus Linguistics Research Circle under The Korean Association of Language Sciences since 2012.

Writing extensively, Dr. Jhang has authored several books, recently including "Ocean Topics: Reading" in 2017, "Maritime Industry English" in 2016, and "Maritime English for Cruising Travelers" in 2014. An active editor-in-chief of "Corpus Linguistics Research" and the author and co-author of multiple peer-reviewed journal articles such as the Journal of Language Sciences and the Journal of Linguistic Sciences, his contributions have earned him a Gokcheon Excellent Paper Academic Award and a Young-Am Excellent Paper Academic Award from the Korean Association of Language Sciences in 2014 and 2018, respectively.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature and a Master of Arts in English linguistics at Pusan National University in Busan, Republic of Korea, followed by a Master of Arts in linguistics at State University of New York at Buffalo in the United States and a Doctor of Philosophy in theoretical linguistics at Simon Fraser University, Dr. Jhang formerly served three years as a sergeant in the South Korean military from 1983 to 1986. A three-time recipient of an Outstanding Researcher Academic Award from the College of International Studies at Korea Maritime and Ocean University in from 2015 to 2017, Dr. Jhang is married and has three wonderful children.
