CALHAN, CO, February 17, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Serenity Springs Wildlife Center has long stressed the importance of maintaining the species we have for future generations. We have one lion in residence that we know to be a rare Barbary Lion, and have a high degree of certainty that several of our other magnificent specimens may also carry a high amount of the rare Barbary gene, which has been extinct in the wild for many years. We have been fortunate to be invited to participate in a project by the PAAZAB (African Association of Zoos & Aquaria) and Wildlink International in an attempt to identify individual animals that may have enough genetic markers suitable for the repopulation of the Barbary/Atlas Lion subspecies. This project is of the most urgent nature, as the species has already been gone from the wild for many years, and only a few suitable individuals remain in private populations around the world, and are quickly aging.

In order to determine if any of our animals might be suitable for this project, we need to collect DNA samples and have them frozen and shipped to the project. In the event that one of our animals is found a suitable match, we must be ready to transport that animal on short notice, and therefore need an international transport cage and the proper permits prior to our acceptance into the conservation program. The following is a breakdown of the costs of this project:

Collection of DNA samples: Materials, $400, Labor, donated
Shipping container for samples, chemicals and tubes: $500
FFWS approved shipping cage: $4500
CITES Permit: $500
Total cost of project: $5900

In the event that you would like to donate funds to this conservation project, you can send your check to Serenity Springs Wildlife Center at 24615 Scott Road, Calhan, CO 80808. If you have specific questions or would like to set up press interviews, please contact our Director of Operations, Julie Walker at Julie@serenityspringswildlife.org or 719-761-1120. Thank you in advance for your support of this important project.
