VENICE, FL, August 21, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Sharky's on the Pier has again partnered with the Venice YMCA for its 5th Annual Venice Triathlon. The 2009 Venice YMCA Triathlon will take place on Labor Day Weekend. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Sharky's on the Pier, which is located at 1600 Harbor Drive South in Venice, Florida.
The contest consists of a 400-meter swim, a 8-mile bike ride, and a 5k run. This triathlon is a USAT sanctioned event. Sharky's will host a post-race breakfast for all participants. Everyone is invited come and watch the action from Sharky's ocean-side deck and the adjoining pier.
Sharky's on the Pier strives to provide a healthy menu as well as active games and entertainment for their patrons because they know healthy lifestyles are hard to achieve these days. Research from the CDC reveals that the rates of overweight and obese adults have more than doubled from 15% in 1980 to 32.9% in 2004. Even worse, those rates for children in all age groups during that same time period have nearly tripled.
Along with Sharky's commitment to community health, the YMCA's mission includes, "encouraging the growth of human potential through mind, body, and spirit." Studies have shown that obesity can increase the risk of health problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and even some cancers. Conversely, regular physical activity and a healthy diet decrease the risk of those diseases while also contributing to stronger bones, muscles, joints, and mental wellness.
Triathlon participants for 1st place in age and race category will receive a Limited Edition Tervis Tumbler. Athletes and spectators alike can expect the usual fun-filled atmosphere at Sharky's with activities to keep the whole family entertained, including live music. Sharky's invites everyone to get up and get moving on their beautiful beachfront location.
The YMCA promotes healthy lifestyles, family strength, self confidence and leadership in youth, building a better community, and fostering greater appreciation for human and cultural diversity. The Venice-area YMCA serves more than 22,000 individuals and families annually. Last year, over $500,000 in scholarship assistance was awarded to low income families.
Sharky's believes that by supporting the community they are supporting their business. Sharky's has made charitable contributions to support organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Children First, Suncoast Humane Society, Special Athlete Boosters, Venice High School, Up With People, Manatee Community College Foundation, and Loveland Center among many others.
For the fifth straight year, Sharky's is proud to be in partnership with the Venice YMCA's Triathlon tradition and hopes to continue to provide their enjoyable venue for this event for many years to come.
