Sharon Ann Stanton Honored for her Commitment to Spiritual Care

Ms. Stanton leads the Arizona Health Ministry in making transitions

GOLD CANYON, AZ, February 02, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sharon Ann Stanton, Coordinator of the Center for Faith Health Ministries of Dignity Health, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in health care.

Ms. Stanton has 53 years of professional experience, with eight years as a coordinator of the Center for Faith Health Ministries at Dignity Health. Throughout her career, she has established herself as an expert in leadership development. On a daily basis, she is responsible for overseeing program development, educating the hospital health team and faith community nurses, and leading the Arizona Health Ministry in transitions.

Ms. Stanton has more than 50 years of multifaceted health care experience ranging from acute care nursing to community and public health administration, home care administration, and national administrative leadership in faith-based health ministries and community nursing. Additionally, she worked for Cesar Chavez for four years, during which time she opened the first migrant outpatient clinic for farm workers in Texas in conjunction with the Texas Department of Health. In 1995, she launched the Center for Health Ministry at St. Joseph Health System in Atlanta, Ga., where she was responsible for bringing untold numbers of parish nurses and health ministers into the faith health movement. Ms. Stanton feels that she is successful because she has never put herself before God, and is always looking to mentor and build up her community.

Looking back, Ms. Stanton attributes her success to her religious faith, her open-mindedness, her foresightedness and the support she received from her parents. She became involved in her profession while hospitalized for a ruptured appendix; it was then that she realized that there was a need for better nursing facilities. The highlights of her career include resolving the challenge of providing a home-to-hospital-to-home transition for people who have been hospitalized or have received services from a medical center.

Ms. Stanton received a master's degree in nursing administration, with a concentration in community health nursing from Texas Woman's University in 1973 and a bachelor's degree in nursing from the College of Saint Teresa in 1962. In addition to her degrees, she is a certified spiritual director through the Arizona Ecumenical Institute for Spiritual Direction. She maintains affiliation with Health Ministries Association, Inc., the Arizona Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, Spiritual Directors International and Sigma Theta Tau International. In 2010, she was nominated for Nurse of the Year in Arizon, having received the Wilkerson Droege Award for Creative Leadership, Practicing Compassionate Ministry and Having Visionary Faithfulness to the Faith and Health Movement in 2005. In years to come, Ms. Stanton intends to establish the first statewide database for the purpose of research and analysis to see how the specialty practice of faith community nursing affects patient outcomes.
