Dr. Akiyama began his career as a student at Sapporo Medical University, obtaining an MD in 1989. He served in a residency in internal medicine with Nikko Memorial Hospital from 1989 to 1990, and a resident in internal medicine with the Hakodate Red Cross Hospital from 1990 to 1992. He then rejoined Sapporo Medical University for an oncology fellowship with the Fourth Department of Internal Medicine from 1992 to 1996, and later earned a PhD with Showa University in 2005.
A respected voice in the medical field, Dr. Akiyama is affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology. A contributor to numerous articles in professional journals, he has discovered Cu/Zn-SOD, a human antioxidant enzyme that is a new oxidative stress marker of hemodialysis, and ren-shen-yang-rong-tang, a Chinese herbal drug that stimulates hematopoietic.
