KANSAS CITY, MO, February 13, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is actively working to raise awareness of its members and of the industry with the general public. Those efforts are paying off with a recent article in the New York Times.

The article appears in the January 30, 2009 edition of the Times and discusses how shipping containers are used to develop affordable housing. It all began when a New Jersey local chapter of the American Institute of Architects decided to "figure out how to create housing so cool everybody would want to live in it."

To that end, the architects launched "Live in the Box: An International Design Competition." The NPSA, along with Sanska USA Building and other companies, made donations to the project, which drew the interest of 150 architects around the world to win the $10,000 prize. The goal was to create an urban, multi-family mixed-use project that used the containers as building blocks.

The NPSA congratulates Felix Heigden and Thomas Nagy of RMJM in Princeton for their design of the "NewPark Station," a complex of nine buildings connected by bridges and pathways. In their design, one portable storage container serves as a studio-sized apartment while four combine to create a 1,200-square-foot dwelling. Modulaire in Miami and Tang & Yang Architects of Savannah, Ga. Came in second and third place, respectively.

"Portable storage innovation never ceases to amaze us," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive NPSA. "We are encouraged by these types of contests are proud to be playing a role in helping spur creative thinking around the important issue of affordable housing, and raising awareness of the portable storage industry's versatility."
