Breaking into what is now a very successful career in medicine, he began his career in 1977 as a staff member in internal medicine at Osaka City University Medical School, and later became a staff member and lecturer for the department of laboratory medicine at the Osaka City University Medical Center. He served as vice director and director for several different hospitals from 1991 to 2003 before spending a year as a physician at Toho-Kasiba Hospital Medical Corporation.
From 2004 to 2011, Dr. Kuwajima served as the chairman of the board of directors for the Toho Hospital Group, and in 2017 he became director with Nishitani's Oasis of Geriatric Health Services Facilities. He also remains active as a member of the Japan Medical Association and the N.Y. Academy of Science, and has contributed many articles to medical journals throughout the course of his career.
