Should It Be Judged As Mismanagement Or A Miracle?
Is giving birth in the confine of a plane's toilet a miracle or a criminal offense. Yes, abandonment of the child is, but there are other issues at stake here.

PORT VILA, VANUATU, April 02, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Women, now living in New Zealand from the village of Samatau, in Samoa, have come to the aid of the twenty-nine year old woman, who gave birth ten days ago, to a baby girl, in the confines of a toilet on a Pacific Blue 747 aircraft. The new born baby was abandoned and left to die, hidden under bloodied paper towels, in a rubbish bin on the airplane. Child Youth and Family in New Zealand, now have custody of Baby Grace, after she was discovered by a Samoan cleaner, who had nurse training.

Baby Grace was most likely conceived during an earlier fruit picking visit to New Zealand. The police are charging the woman with abandonment and assault. Now in custody, she is facing a jail sentence of up to seven years, if found guilty.

"It is human to feel ashamed, especially with some of the opinions being aired in the newspapers, on the radios and the television, yet the Samatau people remain compassionate for one their daughters," says Pa'u Fereti Puni, an orator 'Matai' and representative of the Samatau people in Auckland.

Representative and 'orator Matai' of the Samatau people in Auckland, Pa'u Fereti Puni, says: "It is human to feel ashamed, especially with so many opinions in newspapers and views aired on the radios and television are negative, yet the Samatau people remain compassionate for one their daughters."

Samoa, a tropical island nation of the South Pacific, is a land where a lot of the girls experience their first sexual encounter at a very young age. Many are mothers before the age of 20. It therefore seems quite unlikely that this was the woman's first child. A lot of the Samaon women have very low self-esteem and virtually no self-awareness, particularly those who come from the lower economical and rural groups. "The event was regrettable but people need to learn from it, for the sake of their children," says Pa'u Fereti Puni.

Questions still need to be raised, however, as to why the woman was able to travel when she was nine months pregnant. As a general rule of thumb airlines do not carry pregnant women after the 7th month of their pregnancy. Definitely not without a doctor's certificate.

For the woman to give birth in the confines of an aircraft's toilet, stay there for ten minutes after the airplane landed in Auckland and to be able to clean herself up sufficient to leave the plane without any of the airline staff asking questions, leaves many questions still to be answered. Who needs to learn from this unfortunate incident? The woman's family, the airline staff, those on duty in the airport, the other passengers on the plane, or the wider community in general?
