SILVER LAKE, NH - February 07, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Silver Lake Home Center in Silver Lake, New Hampshire has seen a lot of things change over the years. 2009 proved to be the ultimate challenge in their twenty-eight year history. But this Silver Lake landmark business weathered the economic storm and is looking forward to continuing its long history of serving the local community. "We're still here - we proved to ourselves and the community that we're here to stay," owner Mark Sherwood said in a recent interview.

"It's one thing when things are good - when things slow down, you don't know what to do until you get a feel for the ground you're on," Sherwood continued. "We're finding a lot of people out there who are planning projects; everyone's very anxious to start (building). And prices are great - substantially less than two years ago. It is definitely the right time for people to build and improve their homes. Material prices are the lowest they have been in years and there is a lot of great tradesman available."

Sherwood knows it takes more than just building materials to keep the doors open. "We've invested a lot of time in product education; we have a great staff, eighteen highly trained local professionals. Most of our staff has been in this business their whole lives. It's not just a summer job for us. We take what we do very seriously. People are coming to us for advice on what products to use."

SLHC has seen a change on the building home front with the types of building plans coming through their door. Along with some new homes, garage and storage building projects have increased significantly. And that suits SLHC just fine. "We pride ourselves on giving the same personal attention to every building project - big or small," Sherwood said. Referring to the company's advertising slogan, he added "we focus on 'not bigger...better'. That's key for us."

In the age of the do-it-yourself-superstore, Silver Lake Home Center has built a solid business around working with homeowner and their builders. Miscommunication on the building front can result in harried contractors and dismayed homeowners. "We understand the language of the builder and the needs of the homeowner. We offer guidance in choosing the right materials based on the requisites of the builder," explained Sherwood. And that expertise, according to Sherwood, provides the right communication between the two, resulting in a productive and satisfying building experience for both.

The biggest shift Sherwood has seen as a result of the economic twists and turns of 2009 has been in materials being purchased by homeowners versus by their builder. SLHC liaisons with the builder to make sure the homeowner buys the right materials. "... a lot of builders are giving up purchasing materials, telling the homeowners to buy their own," mused Sherwood. "That's difficult to some degree; we've been trying to support the builder and give the homeowner what they expect at the same time. You really need that three-way partnership - the homeowner, us, and the builder - to make sure the project goes right. We've learned over the years to communicate well (with the homeowner and their builder), bring the parties together, and make everything go smoothly. Everyone ends up with what they expected."

And that always makes for a happy customer. On both sides of the project fence.
