COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, January 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Simpich Showcase Marionette Theatre in historic Old Colorado City will present its original play, The Hans Christian Andersen Storybook, for the 2013 winter season. Interweaving seven of Andersen's classic fairy tales, this solo theatre piece explores and celebrates the themes of Denmark's premier storyteller. The Ugly Duckling takes center stage to live out and discuss his troubling storyline with his author (portrayed by puppeteer David Simpich). Other Andersen characters including the Little Match Girl, Thumbelina and the Steadfast Tin Soldier join in to share their tales as well and cheer the duckling on towards his story's profound conclusion.
This string puppet production, written and designed by David Simpich in 1994, was initially presented at the Broadmoor Hotel of Colorado Springs and periodically toured throughout the United States until 2003. It is now presented every two to three years in the Simpich family's permanent performance facility as part of the theatre's repertoire of sixteen original plays. This year's performance theme is "A Tapestry of Stories," and the theatre will highlight productions in the Old World traditions of Europe beginning with this Scandinavian themed play. England's The Pilgrim's Progress, France's Beauty and the Beast, Germany's Hansel and Gretel and a Bavarian interpretation of the Christ's Nativity are scheduled to round out the year.
