For the past eight years, she has served as the director of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, where she oversees the theology program for graduate students, including the theological summer internship program. In addition to delivering continuing education lectures nationwide, she spends her time researching and writing in the field of theology.
The year 1969 marked the beginning of Dr. Phelps' professional career, as she earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, with a concentration in biology and mathematics, from Siena Heights University. Followed shortly behind was the earning of a Master of Social Work in 1972 from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Arts in Theology in 1975 from St. John's University. A certified social worker, she became the recipient of a Ph.D. in Theology in 1989 from The Catholic University of America.
A vowed woman religious and Catholic Theologian, Sister Jamie (aka Dr. Phelps) belongs to the Adrian Dominican Congregation, the Catholic Theological Society of America, the Society for the Study of Black Religion, the American Academy of Religion, the Black Catholic Theological Symposium, and the Black-Jewish Dialogue Group.
