Almost half of the current 13 million unemployed Americans are unemployed for more than 26 weeks, according to a recent
White House study. Unemployment benefits are intended to aid workers in their job search by encouraging the jobless to continue searching and return to work, ultimately stabilizing the economy.
The economy is stabilized by preparing qualified workers to aid job growth as demand increases and by keeping people from unnecessarily joining other, long-term government programs.
