Solar Innovations has recently moved their business to a new, state-of-the-art, Green facility in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania. This new building is located 15 minutes north of the company's previous location in Myerstown, Pennsylvania.
The 206,000+ square foot Solar Innovations facility is the result of over two years of hard work researching, designing, and building an environmentally-conscious place to work. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards were carefully evaluated when designing this new building. Upon initial review, the new facility should earn Gold Level LEED Certification; however, the Solar Innovations team hopes to achieve Platinum Level Certification in the upcoming months. The building has been evaluated on many categories: Sustainable Site (site selection through construction), Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design.
Solar Innovations has incorporated the following LEED objectives into their new home: preferred parking for energy-efficient and carpool vehicles, bike racks, refurbished furniture, a roof prepared for Photovoltaic Panels, a windmill to generate energy, a cistern to collect rain water, CFL light bulbs, the building oriented to view the natural environment, a complete recycling program, and bio-retention basins to filter and treat storm water run-off.
In addition to the LEED factors, Solar chose even more environmentally-friendly building selections such as low VOC paint, replaceable carpet and ceramic tile squares, the incorporation of Solar Innovations structures, motion censored lights, low-flow porcelain fixtures, recycled content paper products, Green cleaning products, and a compost pile.
This new facility will afford many efficiency, production, and customer satisfaction opportunities as well. The shop layout has taken job and process flow into account. The warehouse and packing stations have been appropriately located. A research and development and testing facility has been incorporated into the facility to ensure quicker release of new products.
