NOORDWIJK, NETHERLANDS, October 13, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS) has announced that this year's Vladimir Syromiatnikov Safety-by-Design Award will go to Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) for safety accomplishments related to its Dragon vehicles. The award will be presented to SpaceX Director of Risk and System Safety Michael Lutomski at the 7th IAASS Conference Awards Gala Dinner in Friedrichshafen (Germany) on Tuesday 21 October 2014.

SpaceX has been awarded for being the first commercial space company to obtain NASA safety certification for resupply missions to the International Space Station, and FAA licence for re-entry safety for its commercial space cargo transportation vehicle Dragon. The award also acknowledges SpaceX's pursuit of innovative human spaceflight design solutions for its new Dragon V2 vehicle for higher performance and enhanced crew safety, in particular during safety-critical mission phases.

The Vladimir Syromyatnikov Safety-by-Design Award honors outstanding designers, engineers or teams who have made major technical contribution towards aerospace systems safety engineering. It is named in honor of Vladimir Syromiatnikov (1934-2006), the Russian designer who created the Androgynous Peripheral Assembly System (APAS), a unique docking system which linked the U.S. Apollo and Soviet Soyuz space capsules in the 1970s. In the 1990s he updated his system to enable docking of Shuttle Atlantis with the Mir space station. The APAS is also used on the International Space Station and formes the basis for the new global standard, the International Docking System Standard (IDSS).

In addition to the award to SpaceX, the IAASS will present during the conference in Friedrichshafen two additional awards to space safety scientists. The Jerome Lederer Space Safety Pioneer Award will go to Keith Wrigth from UK, former head of flight safety at the European Space Agency. The Joseph Loftus Space Sustainability Award will go to Fernand Alby from France, former head of space debris research at the French Space Agency (CNES).

The 7th IAASS International Space Safety Conference "Safety is No Accident" will take place October 20-22 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The IAASS conference is a unique gathering of worldwide top experts in space safety and sustainability. It covers important topics such as as Commercial Human Spaceflight Safety, Space Debris Remediation, Space Situational Awareness and International Space Traffic Control.
