(Sparco.com) has set an example for fellow technology companies, small business owners and organizations of all types and sizes by being the first company in their area to install 120 solar energy panels on the roof of their Millington, TN headquarters. These panels will also reduce energy costs by one third, and give them the chance to sell energy back to their supplier.
Sparco.com's new panels will produce 33,000 kilowatt hours each year as well as save 36 barrels of oil and 1,745 gallons of gasoline each year, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 33,000 pounds, according to Sparco President Soo-Tsong Lim.
"I am proud to see the company playing a leading role in the future of Tennessee by embracing environmentally responsible technology," stated Rob Sanders, Sales Executive. Steven West, Marketing Manager, added, "It is exciting to see that even a small business can make such a huge difference in the world."
The solar panels will also pay for themselves within seven or eight years, according to Lim, adding, "It's a win-win situation. We reduce our carbon footprint, cut our energy costs, and have the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) pay us in payouts and rebates."
In addition to reducing electricity costs for Sparco.com during the day, these panels continue to harvest energy even when the firm is closed, allowing this electricity to travel backward to the TVA's power grid. The TVA will then buy this electricity from Sparco.com for $.12 above the current rate, roughly $.09 per kilowatt hour, yielding a credit to Sparco.com's energy bill.
The project, with a total cost of $146,590, was financed through multiple avenues, with 40% coming from a state grant, 30% from a federal tax credit, and the remaining 30% coming as an investment by Sparco.com.
The installation of the new panels has won Sparco.com praise from Shelby County Mayor A. C. Wharton, who has kicked off his Sustainable Shelby: A Future of Choice, Not Chance agenda, a campaign aimed at fostering environmental growth and sustainability in Shelby County. Sparco.com's investment represents one of the first victories of this campaign.
Eduardo Perez-Glez, Sparco.com's General Manager, noted, "We are proud to serve as a pattern in being the first business located in Shelby County to embrace Mayor Wharton's sustainable, renewable energy initiative." At Sparco.com's recent Solar Energy System Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony, Mayor Wharton stated, "...this may be one small signal, but it is a giant step that we are going to begin breaking that dependency on the [PetCo Dollar]...
