/24-7PressRelease/ -- The Gulf Coast Stand Up Paddleboard Championship is proud to announce that the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission has signed on as the presenting sponsor for the inaugural championship event.
The Gulf Coast Stand Up Paddleboard Championship presented by St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission will take place Saturday, May 22 at Madeira Beach. The Elite Division race will be a 9-mile circuit around Treasure Island, with the start/finish line just north of John's Pass in Madeira Beach. An Open Division competition on a 3.5-mile course off of Madeira Beach will also be offered. The race is a WPA sanctioned event, and one the few SUP competitions featuring a cash purse ($2,500 in cash prizes for the Elite race; more than $2,000 in prizes for the Open Division). "It was a natural fit to pair the area's abundance of sunshine and emerald-green waters with a sport like paddle boarding," said Kevin Smith, director of the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission.
