Mr. Wyllie is a retired librarian, educator, and a prolific member of his community, having given his time to numerous societies in Dayton and the surrounding Montgomery County. From 1962 to 1990, he served as guardian to countless tomes and public repositories of knowledge, notably giving 26 years to the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library. Mr. Wyllie is the recipient of the 2017 Melvin Jones Award from the Lions Club Society for community service, a prize recognizing the countless civic duties he has performed over the years.
Born in Clearwater, Florida to Stanley Clarke and Euginia Lee Wyllie in 1935, Mr. Wyllie studied history and social sciences at Florida Southern College and earned a Bachelor's degree in 1958. He taught civics and English in nearby Lakeland Junior High School and served for a year as a librarian with the Tampa Public Library while working toward a Master's degree in Library Sciences from Florida State University. In 1963, Mr. Wyllie received his degree and accepted a position as director with the Chestatee Regional Library Systems based in Gainesville, Georgia. One year later, he moved to Dayton and joined the county public library there as an industry and science reference librarian. Mr. Wyllie became collection librarian in 1967, and went on to social sciences and genealogy reference in 1973.
Genealogy was one of Mr. Wyllie's particular interests, and he participated with the Florida Genealogical Society and the Florida State Genealogical Society while in the Sunshine State. He served as secretary with the Montgomery County Genealogical Society for one year. Mr. Wyllie also served his community as president of the Men's Republican Club, a member of the executive committee of the Montgomery County Republican Party, commissioner of the television cable commission in the city of Riverside, Ohio, judge of the Montgomery County board of elections, and as lay reader emeritus at the All Saints Anglican Catholic Church. He served as editor of Mad River Currents newsletter in the '90s, Bits in the '60s, and is the former president of Riverside Seniors, as well as the former second vice president of the Sinclair Community College Seniors.
Mr. Wyllie's civic involvement does not end there, and he has been notably affiliated with the AARP, the Miami Valley Arbor of Gleaners, Mensa, Toastmasters, Public Employee Retirees Incorporated, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, and many more organizations. Other noteworthy societies include the Knights of Khorassan, the Sons of the Revolutions where he was former president of the Indiana chapter, the Order of DeMolay, the Ancient Mystic Order of Samaritans, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Odd Fellows, the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Redmen, and the Knights of Pythias, most of which have presented Mr. Wyllie with a plethora of honors. He is a former exalted ruler of the Dayton Elks and a current leading knight.
Professionally, Mr. Wyllie is the recipient of the 1991 to 1992 Edward M. Selby Award by the Ohio Lodge for Research, as well as the 2005 Marion Snyder Award by the Ohio Chapter of Research. Mr. Wyllie was presented with the 1991 Alumnus Distinguished Service Award by Florida Southern College, as well as a 1983 Cross of Honor by Ohio Priory number 18 of the Masonic Knights of York. He was also commissioned to the highest honor bestowed by the commonwealth of Kentucky, that of Kentucky Colonel. For his wealth of contributions to civic duty and dedication to library science, Mr. Wyllie was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and the 1999 to 2000 volume of Who's Who in the Midwest.
