The piece, entitled "Do Competitors Really Matter?" is part of a year-long series aimed at helping marketers trying to reach Human Capital buyers. Competition often is something that cannot be avoided, but there are multiple ways to approach researching you competition that can be beneficial. "Whether or not you concentrate on competition is dependent on how much you care about it," says J. William Tincup, principal and co-founder of Starr Tincup. "I'm a guy who has always been interested in competition, but I've learned that most effort spent on it is wasted." The piece analyzes two options: ignoring the competition and using that competition to further understand the market. For both of these behaviors there are recommendations and suggestions for ways to succeed.
The piece further outlines the various ways to view and strategize against competition, one of which includes ignoring competition altogether and solely focusing on one's own company, employees and products. If a company does wish to strategize against competition, the article discusses the best techniques to do so, which include sticking to a strict regimen of time allocated to evaluating competition and properly researching competition for specific, relevant points of interest.
