Steven Jonas, MD, MPH, Honored for Excellence in Preventive Medicine Education

Dr. Steven Jonas has left his mark as a physician, professor and author



His most recent book is entitled "Ending the Drug War; Solving the Drug Problem: The Public Health Approach" (2016).

    EAST SETAUKET, NY, January 13, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Steven Jonas has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After graduating cum laude from Columbia College in 1958, Dr. Jonas went on to obtain an MD from Harvard University, and a Master of Public Health degree from Yale University. He has utilized his Ivy League education in his successful career as a preventive medicine physician and professor. Dr. Jonas completed a residency in preventive medicine and public health with the New York City Department of Health. He also completed an internship at Lenox Hospital in New York City. Later in his career, Dr. Jonas earned a Master of Science in health management from the Wagner School of New York University. He is a fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences (elected), the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Public Health Association, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the Royal Society of Medicine (UK).

Dr. Jonas was a Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine (NY) from 1971 to 2014. Since that time, he has been a Professor Emeritus of Preventive Medicine at what is now called StonyBrookMedicine. Over his many years at the school, teaching in the Program in Public Health as well as the Department of Preventive Medicine, he taught courses in preventive medicine, community medicine, public health and more. Before going to Stony Brook, Dr. Jonas held an adjunct faculty position at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and subsequently has an adjunct position at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He has also, at times, held associate and adjunct professor positions at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Touro College School of Law, and the Columbia University School of Architecture.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Dr. Jonas served as an attending physician at Nassau County Medical Center from 1973 to 1986. His past roles (1966-71) include district health officer and director of ambulatory care planning and development for the New York City Department of Health, as well as director of the department of social medicine for Morrisania City Hospital.

A diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, Dr. Jonas is a past president of the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research. His other professional affiliations include the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association. He is also well-known for writing, co-writing and co-editing numerous medical publications over the years. His books include "Jonas/Kovner's HealthCare Delivery in the United States," the first book of its type, which he founded in 1977, now in its 11th edition, with total sales of over 450,000 copies; "Medical Mystery: The Training of Doctors in the United States," "Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals," which when originally published in 1986 was the first book for beginners in the sport (second edition published in 2006), "Take Control of Your Weight" (1993), "Talking About Health and Wellness with Patients" (2000), ACSM's Exercise is Medicine (2009), "Duathlon Training and Racing for Ordinary Mortals," (2012), and "Ending the Drug War; Solving the Drug Problem: The Public Health Approach" (2016). He is also the author of the fictional political history book, "The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S., 1981-2022" (originally version published in 1996, 3rd version, 2013). Further on the political side, Dr. Jonas is a regular columnist for The Greanville Post, OpEdNews, Reader Supported News/Writing for Godot, and From the Gman. Along with various formal honors received over the course of his career, Dr. Jonas was chosen to be featured in the 45th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 6th through 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and the 9th through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He has also appeared in several editions of Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
