/24-7PressRelease/ - BERKELEY, CA, September 23, 2006 - Stone Bridge Press, publishers of quality books about Japan, announces three groundbreaking books on Asian cinema:

*Waiting on the Weather: Making Movies with Akira Kurosawa*
*Asia Shock: Horror and Dark Cinema from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand*
*The Films of Kiyoshi Kurosawa: Master of Fear*

1) Waiting on the Weather: Making Movies with Akira Kurosawa (November 2006)

This hold-no-punches memoir by Teruyo Nogami, Akira Kurosawa's assistant on every film from 1950 until his death, is the most revealing and revelatory book on Japanese cinema and the real Kurosawa since Donald Richie's 'Films of Akira Kurosawa.' Like Richie, Nogami writes as if she is speaking directly to you, with raw elegance and exceptional clarity. The "woman behind Kurosawa" offers passionate insights on women in business/film, the origins of Japanese cinema, the making of epics, and so much more!

Francis Ford Coppola agrees: "Nogami-san's salty personality is perfect to show Kurosawa's many sides. The opportunity to know this artist through the lucid eyes of a long-time collaborator is a privilege and an opportunity."

So does Martin Scorsese: "A wonderfully intimate and beautifully written portrait of one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived...essential reading."

2) Asia Shock: Horror and Dark Cinema from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand (November 2006)

Asian Extreme cinema is hot, and Asia Shock lays it out in all its gory glory. Patrick Galloway, who last looked at samurai movies in his well-received 'Stray Dogs and Lone Wolves,' now takes on Asian masters of suspense, the supernatural, exploitation, and bone-chilling, blood-curdling fear. The featured films are pan-Asian, from classics to the contemporary cutting edge, including underrepresented movies from Korea and Thailand. Newbies and devotees alike will return to viewing tips and genre/cultural overviews again and again, inspired to watch and re-watch every film. Galloway's style is highly readable; he's just as engaging in person, and is available for interviews.

by Patrick Galloway
November 2006, $19.95, Paper, 7" x 9", 248 pages; 1-933330-12-0

3) The Films of Kiyoshi Kurosawa: Master of Fear (Spring 2007)

The first full-scale look at the director of "Cure," "Pulse," and "Loft," this in-depth exploration of the work of Kiyoshi Kurosawa (b. 1955), Japan's best-known horror director, includes a filmography and film-by-film dissections. It would make for a graphically intense, sure-grab of a feature, and is essential reading for anyone intrigued by psychologically intense films.

A regular contributor to Asian Cult Cinema, Jerry White has written about everything from the history of the Juon franchise to the current state of Taiwanese film. He has also written several award-winning short films, including "Duel at Red Table" and "Misfortune Cookie."
