Storytelling Couture Kicks Off a Culture Clash

Jewelry Artist Douriean launches fundraising campaign to travel to Africa and learn the art form of storytelling jewelry from African Artisans in Tanzania and Kenya
LOS ANGELES, CA, May 28, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It's been said, 'All that glitters is not gold' but metal jewelry artist Douriean is adding shine and the spotlight to traditional African bead-work with a jewelry making collaboration. She will visit Kenya and Tanzania to learn the intricacies and storytelling behind the indigenous jewelry making tradition. She was accepted to an art residency by MaaColoured a social enterprise with the Samburu women in Tanzania. She will also visit the Umoja Village in Kenya as part of a jewelry making cultural exchange with the Maasai women. Her fundraising campaign will cover travel expenses and materials. To donate go to Storytelling Couture on Kickstarter. "I can't wait to find out the stories behind their intricate pieces," Douriean enthuses. "I work with metal in my designs and I plan to specifically learn about beadwork and how to incorporate it into my metal work."

About MaaColoured - MaaColoured Organization is a social enterprise of SaSa Foundation in Arusha Tanzania. MaaColoured uses jewelry as a forum to educate Maasai women on gender/human rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, economic literacy training, girl's empowerment, and more. The jewelry that the Maasai women create fund their organization's programming.

About the Umoja Village - The Umoja Village is an all-women's village in Northern Kenya that is a safe haven for Samburu women that have experienced abuse, female genital mutilation, child marriages, and other experiences that are imposed on women. In 1990, 15 women, allegedly raped by local British soldiers, and led by Rebecca Lolosoli, formed and registered the Umoja Uaso Women's Group with the then Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Social Services. They started by selling beadwork and other goods. However, after facing threats from men jealous of their success, the members decided to found a women-only village and reside together, thus providing collective security and cooperation. The women sell their traditional beaded jewelry to tourists and online to generate revenue to support their village and school.
