Stratix Point-to-Point Wireless Solution Boosts Throughput, Saves Retailer Nearly $10,000 Annually

    NORCROSS, GA, July 23, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Stratix Corporation, a leading mobile enterprise solutions innovator, announced it is successfully using Motorola Point-to-Point (PTP) wireless technology to deliver breakthrough performance, security, cost efficiency, flexibility and an enhanced end-user experience to organizations needing short- and medium-range site-to-site communications.

A national retailer was challenged with maintaining a consistent wireless communication bridge to enable faster processing and enhance customer satisfaction. The goal for this retailer was to provide a minimum throughput of 256 kbps. Stratix used Motorola PTP 100 Ethernet bridges to exceed this expectation with a sustained aggregate throughput of 7.153 Mbps and savings close to $10,000 per year versus a T1 configuration.

Previously the retailer had used Yagi antennas with WLAN 802.11x radios. A T1 configuration was a third option, but would cost around $800 per month to lease. The retailer opted for an upgrade to wireless because of the Yagi's spotty connectivity, compromised security, and high cost to run its sales transactions, register look-ups, inventory inquiries on handhelds, and other communications between a main store and remote stores in three outlet mall locations across the country. The distances were less than one mile in each case.

By going wireless, the customer reports functions that used to take about a minute to show up on the screen are now taking less than five seconds. Shoppers wait in much shorter lines, and sensitive POS data such as credit card numbers are protected with much greater security. There are no monthly T1 fees—the equipment will be owned after a 16-month investment recovery period—and the hardware is not fixed to the roof, as were the antennas, allowing reuse of the equipment as needed. In addition, the company's Help Desk has seen a significant drop in the number of calls from store employees.

Stratix designed and completed the solution in less than three weeks, including site surveys; data path and wireless spectrum analyses; equipment provisioning for three 5.7GHz Motorola PTP 100 wireless Ethernet bridges with reflectors; installation services including a Link Capacity Test; WLAN/LAN/VPN support; and ongoing support on the physical equipment for the three sites.
