Summer Camp Allows Young Scholars to Participate in Stem Cell Research

Elliott Broidy is helping ensure the future of stem cell research for all at a local level. The USC alumnus provided scholarships for bright high school students from across Los Angeles to attend a prestigious summer camp at his alma mater.
LOS ANGELES, CA, July 18, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Known as the Early Investigator High School Program (EIHS), students work with leading faculty members to conduct cutting edge studies. Broidy first provided scholarships in the summer of 2013 and the EIHS program is adding resources for a bigger turnout in 2014. The format is a ten day training course and 8 week internship. All studies take place at the USC Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles.

The scholarships allow deserving students from all backgrounds to explore educational and career opportunities in a leading field. As interest in math and science declines on a general level; Elliott Broidy noted that EIHS develops future talent for the emerging field to thrive.

Regenerative medicine is gaining attention on several levels. The science of stem cells shows promise in treating cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other diseases. EiHS allows high schools students to learn stem cell theory, participate in lab research and learn the public policy issues that affect the field. While stem cell research continues to grow, the EiHS website notes the camp is among the only programs to offer training and research to pre-college students.

Students leave EiHS knowing the college and career path needed to work in regenerative medicine. With the one year anniversary of his first scholarships looming; Broidy stressed EiHS provides an opportunity for bright minds regardless of income or background.

This was echoed by Jeffrey Gunter, M.D., who is the Chair for Ambassadors for Stem Cell Research at the Keck School of Medicine. He said Elliott Broidy's support not only empowers the lives of youth, but also raises awareness of an important medical issue for the community.
